Bun covers, no bread

For the past several years, the pattern has been thus: Grow hair over summer, get it cut in October, usually to something in the chin-to-shoulder range. To many this may seem backwards, but it keeps the hair down and warm in the winter (and away from ponytail hat bumps) but lets it be long enough in the spring and summer that I can pull it up.

This year, I missed the October cut. I did start to get a hankering for a trimming, but it never happened, and I wasn't that worried about it.

Now, my hair is getting long. So long, in fact, that it won't even stay in a messy bun. But at the same time, I'm not really looking for a trim, because I like it long.

Enter: bun covers. Unfortunately, I am not talented enough to take pictures of the back of my head, and they look silly without hair in them, so pictures will have wait until later.

I use spin pins in an X shape to put up the bun (sometimes with a ponytail base, sometimes not), then put the cover on and BAM! hair is up, hair is contained, no bobby pins involved, and I have finally perfected the process to where I can tell instantly if I've done it in a way that will induce a headache.

(What's a spin pin? It's a... well... a double helix... two spiral pieces of metal that are joined on one end and open on the other. You screw them into your hair to hold it up, unscrew to remove. If I don't use a bun cover, my ends pop out like crazy, and I have to use a bunch of tiny butterfly clips to hold them in. It's probably a flaw in my bun-creating technique, but the covers work great.)

I have one beaded bun cover (used to have a hair stick with it) that I've been using that's all brown and gold and matches my hair. I wanted to have some fun colored ones to use on slouchier, t-shirt days. I now have a bright blue, an orange (of course), and a soft gray. I hope to make a black tomorrow.

So comfy!!
