surprises

Some surprises are good surprises. Like when I surprised my parents with the fact that we had not, in fact, finished all the Christmas chocolate. Or surprise birthday parties. Or surprise snow days. Surprises can rock!

Some surprises are not good surprises. Surprise attacks, surprise mid-season cancellations of your favorite shows, or a surprise end of your skein of yarn three rows before the end of the project.

Yesterday I enacted a good surprise: I visited my once and future boss (I worked there in high school and may work there again this summer) at the barn where I used to work. She had known that I had been planning to visit, but not the specific day or time. It was great fun to see her and to be shown around the renovations that have gone on in the past four years. Good surprise.

Today, I had a bad surprise. I didn't know specifically what was happening at the time of the happening, although I could tell something new was happening. I was supposed to be having a loose filling fixed. I figured something was off when they took two x-rays, as well as using equipment I'd never seen before. After they finished the dentist said, "we had to take a bit of a detour there..." and explained. Surprise! Root canal! Bad surprise.
