College times call for college measures.

I am sewing this weekend. Well, right now I'm cutting out fabric. But I don't have any straight pins. I have safty pins, push pins, and bobby pins. I also have binder clips. So far I've cut out the necessary fleece bits, using saftey pins. Next I'm going to work with a gorgeous fabric with a bit more drape than fleece, so I'm spreading it on the floor, folded as the instructions call for, push pinning it to the carpet, and continuing in a saftey pin fashion. I'll use the bobby pins and binder clips to hold together already cut out pieces such that I can reuse the saftey pins.

What am I making, you wonder?

A large bear (30") with a zipper and pocket and removable gallbladder. And a hospital gown for the bear. And possibly an IV bag and/or elbow bandaid.

Why? A friend of mine has to have her gallbladder removed and she's scared. So I'm making her a bear.

One question. What color should I make the gall bladder? The inside pocket is going to be grey, 'cause that's the fabric I have. But I also have access to a friend's scrap bin, and I have yarn. What color is a gall bladder that needs to be removed? (And should I attach it with yarn or something so it doesn't get lost?)

Green. I always thought gallbladders were green, probably because of pictures like this:

Hey panda,

I don't know about the color -- bear's link could be right! :) Just in case, I sent an email to my friend Ken Saladin who wrote the "Anatomy and Physiology: Form and Function" textbook for McGraw-Hill. I'll let you know what he says.

As to having it look like a gallbladder that needs to be removed, it could have a thermometer in its mouth, an icepack on its head, and a sad expression. But that might be more trouble than you'd like to take!

(You can see that I'm not cut out to be a medical illustrator!)
